Hare's account, such an amount as might be likely to become due to that officer for the half Salary to which he will be entitled for the period occupied in the passage from this Country to the Colony, but that the advance for which you have applied comprising not only the half Salary but a considerable portion of M. Hare's full Salary, would be contrary to the regulations of the public Service, and constitute an objectionable precedent.
Lord Grey regrets that it is not possible to comply with your wishes upon this subject to their full extent. He will, however, be happy on receiving intimation from you to that effect, to direct the Agent General, Mr Baillie, to pay you the amount which would be likely to be due to Mr Hare for the period occupied in his journey to Hong Kong.
